Puebla Group strongly condemns blockade against Cuba and Venezuela

Buenos Aires, Apr 11 (Prensa Latina) More than 40 progressive leaders from the Puebla Group have expressed their strong condemnation of the US-imposed blockade against Cuba and Venezuela, while they asked for respect for the legitimate and sovereign processes of those countries.

Through a videoconference led by Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, and former Presidents Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff (Brazil), Rafael Correa (Ecuador) and Evo Morales (Bolivia), as well as former President of the Spanish government Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the members of that alliance condemned the US government’s blockade against those nations.

In a final document, the Puebla Group also extolled its admiration for the efforts made by the Cuban Government and its health workers in an enormous gesture of solidarity with the peoples of the world, and called to lift all sanctions imposed on Cuba and Venezuela, Chile’s Camilo Lagos explained in an online press briefing.

In response to a question from Prensa Latina at the end of the more-than-three-hour meeting, the Ecuadorian legislator exiled in Mexico, Gabriela Rivadeneira, who is also a member of the alliance, pointed out that they were very emphatic in demanding the peoples’ right to sovereignty and determination.

Cuba has been subjected to an inhumane blockade for 60 years, now more than ever and with the coronavirus pandemic, the Cuban people must be freed of this irrational siege and we are also very concerned about the blockade imposed on Venezuela, which comes with a great onslaught and a very strong military deployment within the region, the legislator said.

«We are very worry that the blockade against Venezuela becomes an issue of interest for military occupation in our region. We were very emphatic in demanding that Cuba and Venezuela are not blockaded anymore, the Ecuadorian politician said, after noting that the Puebla Group expressed support for and solidarity with the two nations.
